ConnectOTT

ConnectOTT is a dinner and networking event that creates strategic opportunities to meet inspiring people in the city of Ottawa.

The event bridges the gap between emerging professionals looking to progress in their careers and grow their networks and well-established community and industry leaders who have been there and done that and are looking to give back.

Throughout a three-course dinner, participants are matched with leaders in industries of their choice. Each course is spent with 2 leaders and 6 young professionals, a format which maximizes face time and allows for both mentorship and network opportunities to develop in an intimate setting.

This year’s event will be attended by over 240 participants including 60 leaders in 10 different industries.

Opening a Food Establishment in Ottawa

This presentation is lead by the City’s Business Information Officer (BIO), Joanne Cléroux. The BIO’s role is to support entrepreneurs starting up a food establishment and help navigate through the City’s licence and permits process.

This presentation has been crafted to reach a little beyond that scope. This session will provide insight into the City’s budding entrepreneur-centric services by speaking directly to business licence categories, home based business regulations and most significantly about the interdepartmental permit and legislation requirements for all types of food premises. If you are thinking about opening a bakery, café, restaurant, wholesale, catering business or think your idea might have some overlap with the requirements, this is the session for you.

Speaker Bio: Joanne Cléroux, Business Information Officer, City of Ottawa Joanne has 29 years of experience working within various departments at the City of Ottawa. Joanne’s experience began in the mid 80’s in the City Clerk’s Office, she then accepted positions within Public Works, RPAM, ITS and currently is working in the Service Ottawa Department. The Business Ambassador Program started in May 2013, as part of a Service Ottawa Service Excellence pilot project. A decision was made to continue the program after the project was completed in early 2015. Joanne accepted the role as Business Ambassador at that time and has been responsible for guiding restaurateurs through the City’s application processes and requirements applicable to food premise businesses in relation to various legislations such as the Ontario Building Code and the Health Protection and Promotion Act.

Restaurateurs can contact Joanne for assistance concerning any matters dealing with the City of Ottawa’s regulations by emailing her at bio1stop@ottawa.ca.

The program offers youth-led ventures the opportunity to accelerate their business by working full time over the course of three months during the summer. Startup Garage provides each participant company with four essential tools: cash, space, mentorship and support. The deadline to apply is February 4th, 2016.

The program is delivered through the generous support of Capital Entrepreneurs (Ontario Centres of Excellence), Invest Ottawa, Gowlings,Logan Katz L.L.P. and adjoy.

Who is Eligible?

• Entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 29;
• University of Ottawa, Carleton University, Algonquin College and La Cité Collégiale undergraduate or graduate students – regardless of age;
• uOttawa recent graduates (graduation date after June 2014) – regardless of age.

The applicant must reside in Ottawa or Eastern Ontario (must be in Ottawa from June through August). Individual applicants are discouraged; teams are encouraged! Students are strongly supported in building teams before they build their business.

Startup Garage is looking for companies that need help taking their business to the next level, whether this means building a great product, launching a beta product, ramping up sales, expanding to new markets or gaining the appropriate traction to secure additional funds. Startup Garage is looking for a team that has strong domain expertise, coupled with business and technical backgrounds as well as a clear understanding of the “hustle” it takes to be an entrepreneur.

Your company’s product should be tailored to a specific need, significant enough to warrant that a customer pay for it. Speak to your potential customers!

Your company’s product should be innovative and have a clear differentiating factor with respect to other currently available solutions that answer the same need.

The number of customers willing to buy your product (i.e. your market) should also be large enough to allow your company to grow.

Tech Tuesday: Calling all Groundhogs!

Happy 2016 to all, and welcome back to our TechTuesday monthly get-togethers.  The first Tuesday of each month, as always, and starting on February 2nd this year.  Those who are aware of such things will also know it as Groundhog Day.  And while we don’t have a guest appearance by Bill Murray to entertain us over and over again, we certainly will have a couple of great presentations to kick the year off.

To start, you will hear about and meet the local Directors of the Founder Institute, an exciting Silicon-Valley-based start-up Accelerator that will be opening a Chapter here in Ottawa over the next few months, with ambitions going forward to launch more than 25 meaningful and enduring new technology companies per year in the Region.  One of the most challenging and effective Accelerators in the world, this new Chapter will provide more outstanding fuel for the continued resurgence and growth of the local tech community.

Next, you will meet Tyler Nelson, a local technology executive with a string of corporate and start-up successes on his resume, including senior roles at Research in Motion/RIM, Bridgewater Systems, QNX Software, Adenyo Inc., YOU.i Labs and Ackroo Inc.  Currently, Tyler divides his time between his most recent start-up (mobile security and privacy firm Article 12 Technologies), and a variety of advisory engagements with companies in our own SaaS Accelerator, L-SPARK, as well as others.

Tyler will be with us that evening to speak to a topic he has become quite biased about over his career – that of Invention versus Innovation.  In his view, too many start-ups try to ‘invent’ value in their new products, when experience has taught him that ‘innovation’ (iteration toward a given market fit) is likely to create more predictable and durable outcomes.

We hope you can come out and hear both these stories …
